Equinix Launches South Africa’s first International Business Exchange Data Centre

On 23 October 2024, Equinix, a major US – based digital infrastructure company, launched its first International Business Exchange (IB X) data centre in South Africa. This cutting- edge, R 2. 8 billion facility, known as JN 1, is strategically located in Germiston, close to OR Tambo International Airport and is set to become a key digital hub for the continent.

The JN 1 data centre spans over 1, 900 square meters and is fully carrier – neutral, providing essential colocation and interconnection services. This robust infrastructure supports a variety of telecommunications, cloud services and data exchange needs, ensuring that the facility can serve as a secure, resilient digital hub. 

The JN 1 launch event was attended by prominent figures, including Gary Aitkenhead, SVP of Operations at Equinix EMEA; Johan Arts, SVP Equinix EMEA; Sandile Dube, Equinix South Africa’ s newly appointed Managi ng Director and notable South African leaders such as Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni and Deputy Communications Minister Mondli Gungubele. Additionally, US Ambassador to South Africa, Reuben E. Brigety II, underscored the significance of this investment as part of America’ s commitment to bolstering Africa’ s digital landscape.

A Collaborative Effort Led by GGDA

The Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA) played a crucial role i n bringing the JN 1 data centre to fruition. Working closely with the City of Ekurhuleni and Eskom, the team supported the project to its completion. Equinix’ s investment in the region exemplifies a collaborative effort to empower South Africa’ s digital infrastructure, further establishing Gauteng as a tech – forward province that can serve global markets.

Equinix announced its plans to establish a South African data centre in December 2022 as part of US President Joe Biden’ s Digital Transformation with Africa initiative in 2022. This project aligns with broader objectives to enhance digital literacy, increase access to di gital resources and position Africa as a leader in digital innovation. The new JN 1 data centre brings advanced connectivity solutions and significant tech investment to South Africa, reinforcing America’ s commitment to Africa’ s evolving digital landscape.
