The Eastern Development Corridor, which integrates much of Ekurhuleni, includes 29 industrial initiatives under the banner of Aerotropolis to revitalise manufacturing, aviation, logistics and transport industries linked to OR Tambo International Airport.

Due to the interregional nature and transformative magnitude of Aerotropolis, this project has now been elevated to a Gauteng City Region-wide initiative.

The Tambo Springs inland port development will have an estimated R7.5 billion investment over five years. This project will create a total of 110 000 jobs over 15 years. Another development in this corridor is the Gibela train manufacturing plant, which is producing new trains for Prasa.

OR Tambo SEZ

The OR Tambo SEZ is a Special Purpose Vehicle that is a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (The GGDA). Established in 2009, the OR Tambo SEZ is mandated with the development and operations of the designated Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at OR Tambo International Airport. In support of its mandate, the OR Tambo SEZ works to create an enabling platform for manufacturing investment opportunities that support the positioning of OR Tambo International Airport SEZ and the Gauteng City region as globally competitive investment locations. The OR Tambo SEZ also aims to promote job and enterprise development opportunities, the latter that is facilitated through partnerships that can enable the sustainable growth of emerging enterprises or new industrialists, further contributing to economic growth.

Home of the ORTIA SEZ

The Eastern Corridor is home to the OR Tambo International Airport SEZ (ORTIA SEZ) is located in Ekurhuleni with a focus on agro-processing, Jewellery manufacturing and mineral beneficiation as well as the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Ortia Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct

South Africa is one of the largest producers of gold, diamonds, and platinum in the world, yet its jewellery manufacturing industry remains small. The OR Tambo SEZ initiated the establishment of the Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct which became operational from 2021. The project involves the development of a varying range of facilities catering for the beneficiation of precious and semi-precious minerals and stones, diamond cutting, polishing, and trading of jewellery.

Medical Manufacturing Cluster

OR Tambo SEZ is a SPV which is 100% owned by the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA). It was established to manage the establishment and operationalization of the OR Tambo International Airport SEZ (ORTIA SEZ). The OR Tambo SEZ has identified 29 ha of land in OR Tambo International Airport Precinct (“ORTIA Precinct 2”) to set up a medical manufacturing cluster. This is an approximately R4,2billion (USD 289,6 million) development located adjacent to the OR Tambo International Airport.

S&J Industrial Estate

S&J Industrial Estate allows for a planned industrial precinct on a site of approximately 160ha of developable land by providing a development that focuses on logistics, light manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution. The development will be released in phases. Developed in partnership between Abland and Redefine Properties (supported by City of Ekurhuleni).

Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis

The City of Ekurhuleni, ACSA and other established private sector companies have embarked on Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis growth initiatives to stimulate passenger travel and air cargo growth. The 1 975 km2 Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis anchors its growth trajectory on the busiest airport on the continent and its manufacturing capabilities. The city seeks investments for its 30-year masterplan and is inviting private investors, funding institutions, property developers and commercial institutions to unlock the potential of the region.
